Urge Your Members of Congress to Prioritize Policies that Improve the Mental Health of Our Nation!
In 2021, nearly 1 in 3 teenage girls seriously considered attempting suicide—up nearly 60% from 2011. Additionally, one in five children experience mental health issues and over half are untreated, according to SAMHSA data. While mental health conditions show signs and symptoms by age 25 in nearly 75% of individuals, there is currently an 11-year delay until a person connects to services.
This May 18th is the 2023 Mental Health Action Day, and Mental Health America (MHA) hopes to engage as many individuals and organizations in promoting three policies to public officials:
1. Giving greater flexibility to states to fund prevention activities through the Mental Health Block Grant.
2. Holding internet technology companies accountable for their harmful effects on youth.
3. Growing a more specialized professional behavioral health workforce for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth.
Sharing your lived experience with a mental health condition or substance use disorder may be difficult. But advocating for yourself and others doesn’t have to be. The most courageous
individuals are those who take action even when it is difficult.

Urge Your Members of Congress to Invest in Sustainable Funding for Mental Health in FY 2024
MHA affiliates are meeting with congressional offices on Wednesday, March 8th, to elevate the needs of individuals on the ground and request funding increases for states and for federal programs that promote mental health and crisis response. We are also seeking additional coverage of peer specialists in Medicare.
Last year, we saw unprecedented investment in mental health programs and services by Congress. But, many officials think they are done. Help us make them understand that one-time funding just won’t cut it.
As our country faces continued impact of the COVID-19 public health emergency, we ask you to send a letter to your elected officials in support of: prevention and early intervention in the Mental Health Block Grant, youth-focused initiatives at the CDC, peer support coverage in Medicare, and 988 operations and education.
Please take action now!
