Tell Congress to support the EARLY Minds Act!
Prevention and early intervention strategies have demonstrated success in improving mental health outcomes, particularly for young people. Yet, states currently have no dedicated federal funding source to support children and families before significant emotional distress occurs. As a result, many young people are unable to access care until their symptoms become severe, even as nearly 40% of high school seniors report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and about 1 in 5 have seriously considered suicide.
That is why we are asking you to urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor (H.R. 1735/S. 779), the Early Action and Responsiveness Lifts Youth (EARLY) Minds Act. This bipartisan legislation would provide states with flexibility within the Mental Health Block Grant (MHBG) to use up to 5% of funding for evidence-based prevention and early intervention services, including education, outreach, screening, and peer support. Currently, MHBG funds are largely restricted to individuals with a diagnosed mental health condition, meaning support is only accessible after significant distress and functional impairment have occurred.
Early support is critical. Nearly 75% of mental health conditions begin before age 25, yet resources to intervene early remain limited. In contrast to mental health funding, states are required to use a portion of federal substance use funding for prevention, highlighting a clear gap in how we approach mental health. Providing states with the option to invest earlier can help reduce the need for crisis care, improve long-term outcomes, and better meet the needs of young people and families.
Please take a moment to contact your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the EARLY Minds Act. As a constituent, your voice is one of the most powerful tools in shaping policy, and it is critical that lawmakers hear strong support for expanding access to early mental health care.
Tell Your Senators to Oppose Medicaid Cuts!
The Senate has released its bill to extend President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, and unfortunately, the bill makes even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill passed last month.
The chamber is on track to pass steeper cuts by the 4th of July holiday deadline, so we need your help to tell Congress that the public does not support cutting Medicaid funding to states. Medicaid is a bedrock of the public mental health system and is shown to help keep people in recovery and employed. Should this bill pass, at least 15 million people are estimated to lose their health plan.
Please call your Senators and send them a message TODAY to tell them to oppose cutting Medicaid.
