Tell Congress to Vote No on Medicaid Cuts!
The budget reconciliation process is still underway in Congress, and things are heating up. Right now, Congress is debating sweeping cuts to the Medicaid program that threaten the healthcare coverage of millions of Americans.
Please join us in telling Congress to protect the Medicaid program by opposing these changes.
Studies show that, following the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, people with depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders lost Medicaid coverage at higher rates than other Medicaid enrollees. These same populations will be at higher risk of losing coverage if the current reconciliation bill is enacted. The current bill would:
-Add additional hurdles that would make it more difficult for people to enroll and maintain their Medicaid eligibility, such as work requirements, increasingly frequent and burdensome eligibility checks, and the reversal of federal rules that required systems to use existing information for eligibility determinations, rather than placing the burden on individuals and families to enter the same information each time. States that have implemented these policies have seen significant rates of Medicaid coverage loss due to faulty websites and errors by the state.
-Mandate co-pays for specialty care, including mental health and substance use visits, for some low-income adults, causing them to reduce or forgo the services they need.
-Ban all gender-affirming care and some family planning care.
-Restrict states from collecting provider taxes to fund their share of the Medicaid program.
During budget reconciliation, where Congress considers only spending and tax-related bills, the Senate only requires a 51-vote majority (compared to the usual 60-vote majority required when considering all other bills). This means that, if the current reconciliation bill passes in the House of Representatives, only 51 votes are needed in the Senate to pass the bill, and over $700 billion will be cut from the Medicaid program, forcing Governors and state legislatures to cut services and remove individuals and families from the Medicaid program. If that happens, millions of Americans will be left without access to healthcare, including mental health and substance use care.

Urge Your Members of Congress to Invest in Sustainable Funding for Mental Health in FY 2024
MHA affiliates are meeting with congressional offices on Wednesday, March 8th, to elevate the needs of individuals on the ground and request funding increases for states and for federal programs that promote mental health and crisis response. We are also seeking additional coverage of peer specialists in Medicare.
Last year, we saw unprecedented investment in mental health programs and services by Congress. But, many officials think they are done. Help us make them understand that one-time funding just won’t cut it.
As our country faces continued impact of the COVID-19 public health emergency, we ask you to send a letter to your elected officials in support of: prevention and early intervention in the Mental Health Block Grant, youth-focused initiatives at the CDC, peer support coverage in Medicare, and 988 operations and education.
Please take action now!
