Funding restored, now Congress must keep mental health a bipartisan priority in the FY 26 appropriations bill
Mental Health America is grateful to the Administration, Congress, and all those who advocated for the restoration of federal funding for mental health and substance use programs in communities across the country. The swift action to reverse these cuts protected access to lifesaving care and prevented widespread disruption to services at a critical moment.
But this moment also underscores what is at stake.
As Congress continues to negotiate funding for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Fiscal Year 2026, it is critical that lawmakers continue their bipartisan commitment to fully funding mental health and substance use programs. Stable, predictable investments are essential to maintaining access to care, strengthening community-based systems, and preventing future disruptions that put people at risk.
Congress must build on this bipartisan progress and ensure that HHS is adequately funded in FY26 so individuals, families, and communities can continue to access the mental health and substance use care and support they need.
Urge Your Members of Congress to Invest in Sustainable Funding for Mental Health in FY 2024
MHA affiliates are meeting with congressional offices on Wednesday, March 8th, to elevate the needs of individuals on the ground and request funding increases for states and for federal programs that promote mental health and crisis response. We are also seeking additional coverage of peer specialists in Medicare.
Last year, we saw unprecedented investment in mental health programs and services by Congress. But, many officials think they are done. Help us make them understand that one-time funding just won’t cut it.
As our country faces continued impact of the COVID-19 public health emergency, we ask you to send a letter to your elected officials in support of: prevention and early intervention in the Mental Health Block Grant, youth-focused initiatives at the CDC, peer support coverage in Medicare, and 988 operations and education.
